Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, was a central figure of the English high nobility and one of the most influential women of the early eighteenth century, chiefly because of her close friendship with Queen Anne. She served as the queen’s personal political confidante, holding household offices that gave her direct access to the monarch’s privacy and decision-making, which made her a sought-after interlocutor for authorities and petitioners. Married to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, she maintained a long-standing and collaborative partnership: while he led military campaigns during the War of the Spanish Succession, she represented and defended political interests in London, promoted the Whig cause, and helped secure the couple’s rise to power. Her influence aided the placement of allies in government and important appointments during Anne’s reign. After the rupture with the queen in 1711, the Churchills were removed from court but later regained prestige under the Hanoverian dynasty. Sarah oversaw the construction of Blenheim Palace and, enriched by a substantial inheritance, became one of the wealthiest women in Europe. Her determined and combative personality produced frequent conflicts with public figures and relatives, leaving a legacy of power, ambition, and controversy in British history.
