Sophie Charlotte of Oldenburg, nicknamed “Lotte,” was a member of the House of Holstein‑Gottorp and the daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Augustus II of Oldenburg. Raised amid palaces and foreign travels, she spent her childhood between Germany, England and Italy, developing an interest in sailing and stays at health spas due to the fragile health she inherited from her mother. Her mother’s early death and her father’s second marriage shaped her family life and hastened her desire to marry. In 1906 she married Prince Eitel Friedrich, the second son of Emperor Wilhelm II. The wedding, held during the emperor’s silver jubilee celebrations, was a prominent social event but produced an unhappy marriage: Sophie was unable to form social ties in Berlin, and the union was marred by infidelities and growing distance, problems that intensified during the First World War. After their divorce she later married Harald van Hedemann. Known for a reserved life, she devoted herself to reading, painting and a small circle of friends, and her historical notoriety is chiefly linked to the troubled marriage with a member of the Prussian imperial family.
