Edgar John Bergen was an American ventriloquist, actor, radio performer and comedian, recognized as one of the major entertainment figures of the 20th century. He became famous for the dummies Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, stage partners that gave him international exposure and established him as a pioneer of modern ventriloquism. His technique and style earned him a reputation as a standard-bearer in the puppet arts, with industry organizations citing him as a model of the craft.
Over his career, Bergen moved successfully among radio, film and television, appearing in numerous movies and programs as himself and as the voices of his figures. That versatility placed him at the center of American popular culture from the 1930s through the 1950s and influenced later generations of comedians and performers.
