Edgar Morin (pen name of Edgar Nahoum) is a French anthropologist, sociologist and philosopher, regarded as a leading figure in the study of complexity and transdisciplinarity. He is a research emeritus of the CNRS and a former research director. Trained in law, history and geography, he went on to deepen his studies in philosophy, sociology and epistemology. He has written more than thirty books, among them the monumental La Méthode (six volumes), Introduction to Complex Thought and The Seven Knowledge(s) Necessary for the Education of the Future. His intellectual life was marked by political engagement: he took part in the French Resistance during World War II, joined the Communist Party in the 1940s and later broke with it over anti-Stalinist positions. In the postwar period he worked at the CNRS and founded centers and journals at the EHESS focused on mass communication and the transdisciplinary study of the social sciences. Morin developed what he called “complex thought,” proposing operators such as dialogic relations and recursivity to address multifaceted phenomena and to critique scientific reductionism. His work has influenced debates on education, epistemology and public policy, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary the humanities.
