Edmond Isidore Étienne Nocard was a leading French veterinarian and microbiologist of the late 19th century, affiliated with the École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort and the Pasteur Institute. Trained at Alfort, where he later became professor and director, he modernized veterinary clinical practice and brought emerging bacteriological laboratory techniques into medical and veterinary care. In research he collaborated with Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux, participated in investigations of anthrax and epidemics such as cholera, and established a reference laboratory at Maisons‑Alfort. He developed laboratory methods—new culture media, techniques for serum separation, and anesthesia for large animals—and published on bovine tuberculosis, promoting measures for its prevention. His principal contribution was identifying the agent of bovine farcy, which led to the genus Nocardia being named in his honor; these microorganisms are now known to cause nocardiosis in animals and, in humans, in immunocompromised patients. He also described agents of mastitis and other animal diseases, leaving a durable influence on veterinary pathology and the intersection of animal and public health.
