Edmund Landau was a prominent German mathematician, known for fundamental contributions to number theory and complex analysis. A prolific author, he published over 250 papers and several influential monographs, including a treatise on the distribution of prime numbers and both elementary and analytic works on algebraic numbers and ideals. His collections and textbooks were widely circulated and reprinted throughout the twentieth century, establishing him as a standard reference author. Graduating and habilitating at the University of Berlin in the early twentieth century, Landau combined original research with teaching, leaving texts used in advanced courses and reference works. Among his notable results is an early paper on the Möbius function, as well as contributions to additive theory and Diophantine equations. Part of a vigorous European scientific context, Landau was also connected to influential academic networks of his time; his technical works and collected writings continue to shape later studies in number theory and analysis. His legacy comprises both specific results and a lasting body of reference publications.
