Edward Theodore Gein, known as Ed Gein, was an American criminal whose actions in the rural Plainfield, Wisconsin area in the 1950s shocked the public because of their violence and nature. Formally convicted of two murders, Gein also became notorious for exhuming corpses and fashioning objects from human remains found on his property — a discovery that mobilized authorities and the press in 1957.
Raised in a family environment marked by isolation and strict moral rigidity, Gein lived a socially isolated life and had difficulty with relationships, factors that figure prominently in accounts of his crimes. His mother, a dominant figure in his life, and the early death of his brother are frequently invoked to explain his later behavior.
After psychiatric evaluation he was found legally incapable of standing trial because of mental illness (schizophrenia) and was committed to a psychiatric institution, where he remained until his death in 1984. Gein’s case influenced debates about mental health and criminal responsibility and also affected popular culture, inspiring fictional works that drew on elements of horror from his crimes.
