Edwin Klebs was a Swiss–German microbiologist whose work in the 19th century made a decisive contribution to the establishment of modern bacteriology. Working on infectious diseases, Klebs described and isolated microorganisms associated with human illnesses, including the 1883 identification of the etiologic agent of diphtheria — the bacillus then called Klebs–Löffler (now Corynebacterium diphtheriae). His methods and observations influenced important contemporaries and successors in the history of microbiology. Klebs also performed pioneering experiments in experimental infection: he isolated bacterial colonies earlier than some of his peers, produced experimental tuberculosis in animals by inoculating them with infected milk, and was among the first to inoculate syphilis into primates. These interventions anticipated procedures that would become routine in studies of pathogenicity. In formulating the so‑called "Grundversuche" (fundamental tests), Klebs proposed postulates intended to bring order to bacteriological research, although some of his premises were later revised as knowledge evolved. His work includes publications in pathological anatomy and a scientific output that—despite errors, such as his mistaken hypothesis about malaria—left methodological and historical legacies for bacteriology.
