Edwin Moses is a former American athlete widely regarded as the greatest 400 m hurdler in history. A two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, he dominated the event in the 1970s and 1980s, compiling a remarkable run of 122 victories—107 of them consecutive over more than nine years—and setting four world records during his career. A graduate in physics and industrial engineering, Moses combined technical preparation with a rigorous training method — he became known for maintaining thirteen strides between hurdles, a tactic that gave him a tactical edge and greater energy efficiency over his rivals. His first major breakthrough came with the gold and world record in Montreal in 1976; he further established himself with the 47.02 clocking recorded in 1983. Beyond his on-track achievements, he played a significant role in modernizing Olympic sport: drawing on his professional and athletic experience, he took part in initiatives that helped relax the International Olympic Committee’s amateurism rules, paving the way for sponsorships and funding that benefited athletes and national committees.
