Elaine Pagels is a historian of religion and professor emerita at Princeton, known for her studies of early Christianity and Gnosticism. She rose to wide public attention with The Gnostic Gospels (1979), a work that introduced the Nag Hammadi library to general readers, discussed internal divisions within early Christianity, and highlighted the place of women in Jewish and Christian traditions. The book was a bestseller and received major literary awards.
Throughout her career, Pagels has explored how noncanonical texts—such as the Gospel of Thomas—present theological perspectives distinct from those of the canon. In subsequent books, including The Gnostic Paul, Adam, Eve, and the Serpent, and The Origin of Satan, she examines disputes within the early church, the formation of orthodoxies, and the construction of figures like Satan to demonize religious and cultural rivals.
Beyond her scholarly and popular writing, her career includes significant honors, among them a MacArthur Fellowship and the National Humanities Medal. Her work has influenced public debates about Christianity’s past and helped bring to light texts and readings that expanded understanding of religious pluralism in the early centuries.
