Eleanor Ruth Keaton was an American dancer and variety artist, known both for her work as a singer and member of the MGM chorus and for her personal and professional partnership with comedian Buster Keaton. She began her career as a nightclub dancer and as part of the chorus in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musicals, appearing in productions such as Born to Dance and Rosalie, until she was let go during the postwar cuts. She married Keaton in 1940 and played a central role in stabilizing his personal life and reviving his career, performing as his onstage partner in variety shows and on European tours in the 1940s and 1950s. The duo gained attention at the Cirque Medrano in Paris with a pantomime number that became part of both their repertoires, and they also appeared on contemporary television programs. After her husband’s death she kept Keaton’s memory alive through interviews with biographers and historians, participation in silent film festivals, and by serving as a comedic consultant for filmmakers. In later life she also bred pedigree dogs and appeared as a guest lecturer at festivals and special screenings.
