Elector of Saxony and leader of the Protestant faction in the 16th century, Johann Friedrich I, known as Frederick, was one of the principal defenders of the Lutheran Reformation within the Holy Roman Empire. Educated by Georg Spalatin and a personal friend of Martin Luther, he sponsored the complete printing of Luther’s works in Wittenberg and promoted ecclesiastical reforms across several regions, establishing consistories and supporting the appointment of bishops favorable to the Protestant cause. As head of the Schmalkaldic League, he became a central figure in the era’s religious and political negotiations, rejecting councils that he believed would preserve papal authority. His resolute actions earned him prestige among Protestant princes and the enmity of emperors and regional rivals. He was defeated and captured at the Battle of Mühlberg (1547) during the Schmalkaldic War, sentenced to life imprisonment and stripped of the electorate; yet he remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to abjure despite heavy pressure. Released in 1552, he reorganized government and promoted cultural and educational projects, including the idea of the University of Jena, a legacy realized by his sons after his death. His career combined political authority, confessional leadership, and intellectual patronage, leaving a lasting mark on the consolidation of Lutheranism and the territorial history of Saxony.
