Elisabeth Kübler-Ross was a Swiss psychiatrist known for changing how medicine and society approach death and the care of terminal patients. Her most influential work, On Death and Dying (1969), introduced the well-known model describing emotional stages in the face of death—commonly summarized as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—and advocated listening to patients’ voices as a legitimate source of clinical and human insight. Her work stimulated the creation and expansion of hospices and palliative care practices, and led to training professionals in thanatology as well as to the development of methods to support grieving families. In subsequent decades she worked with severely ill children and with patients with HIV/AIDS, championing dignified treatment and the expansion of specialized services. Late in her career she devoted herself to research on near-death experiences, a topic that provoked controversy among scientists. Academically recognized with numerous honorary degrees, her institutional legacy endures through foundations and archives that preserve her work and promote practices of care and humanization in the dying process.
