Elizabeth Johnson (née Reynolds) was an English pamphleteer of the eighteenth century, known for her religious tracts and for the uncommon attempt to claim the reward offered under the Longitude Act of 1714. Sister of the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, Johnson suffered financial hardship after her husband abandoned her, a circumstance that led her to publish anonymously works such as The Explication of the Vision to Ezekiel (1781) and Astronomy and Geography of the Created World (1785). Although her publications were dismissed by contemporaries like Tobias Smollett, later documents identified her as the author of the papers sent to the Board of Longitude in 1786, making her one of the few women to submit proposals on the determination of longitude — then a field dominated by men and institutional authorities. Her approach combined religious and geographical concerns, reflecting both her theoretical interest and the practical need to secure funds. The posthumous recognition of Johnson’s authorship of these pamphlets reframes her activity as an example of female participation in the scientific and religious debates of the period; her legacy lies in the attention it brings to women engaged in intellectual currents from which they were typically excluded in the eighteenth century.
