Elizabeth Short was an American young woman whose brutal death in January 1947 became one of the most talked‑about unsolved crimes in the United States. Although often described as an aspiring actress, there are no records of credits or known work in that field during her time in Los Angeles. Her mutilated body was found in a vacant lot in the Leimert Park neighborhood, and the case quickly drew intense press attention, which nicknamed the victim the “Black Dahlia” in reference to a contemporary film noir.

The investigation generated extensive media coverage and an extraordinary number of confessions and suspects—59 people confessed and 25 were investigated—but no one was convicted, and the murder remains unsolved. The case’s notoriety stems not only from the violence of the crime but also from its role as one of the first major postwar criminal cases to attract national attention in the United States.

Short’s story inspired a vast body of cultural work: it influenced books, films, and references in games, music, and television, becoming an emblem of public fascination with unsolved crimes and of media exploitation of victims. Her legacy endures as the subject of studies, theories, and fictional portrayals that continue to revisit the episode.
