Emanuel Swedenborg was a Swedish polymath whose work spanned science, philosophy, and religion. Trained in mining engineering, he held public posts such as Royal Assessor for mining and represented the nobility in Parliament, while also teaching mathematics at Uppsala. He published pioneering studies in fields including crystallography, geology, anatomy, hydraulics, and astronomy, and founded the scientific journal Daedalus Hyperboreus in 1716–1718. A prolific inventor, he left designs and devices that include a flying machine—considered the first rational draft of an airplane by the Royal Aeronautical Society—alongside sketches of pumps, cranes, mining mechanisms and even a submarine prototype. His scientific work anticipated major hypotheses, such as the nebular theory of cosmic formation and ideas about magnetism and galactic organization. At age 56 he reported spiritual experiences that led him to write extensive biblical exegesis and to found the Swedenborgian movement. His theological writings influenced thinkers and artists but also provoked controversy and censorship for challenging traditional Christian doctrines. Today he is recognized in Sweden both for his scientific contributions and for his religious and cultural legacy.
