Emil Zátopek was one of the most prominent long-distance runners of the twentieth century, known by the nickname "The Prague Locomotive." His career is best remembered for his extraordinary performance at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he won gold in the 5,000 m, 10,000 m and the marathon — the only man to win those three events at the same Games. At the 1948 London Olympics he had already taken gold in the 10,000 m and silver in the 5,000 m.
Over his career he set about twenty world records at distances from 5,000 m to 30,000 m, and in 1951 he became the first person to run more than 20 km in one hour (20,052 m). He also became known for introducing innovative training methods, such as interval training, which influenced athletic preparation in the following decades.
Married to Olympic javelin champion Dana Zátopková, Zátopek became an emblematic figure both for his sporting achievements and for his political engagement: he was expelled from the Communist Party in 1968 for supporting the Prague Spring. In 2012 he was honored by being inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
