Emilio Salgari was an Italian novelist whose output excelled in the adventure genre, with a particular focus on maritime and pirate narratives. A prolific writer, he published about 90 novels in his lifetime—many serialized in periodicals—and left a posthumous set of works attributed to his sons, building an extensive catalogue of exotic adventures. Among his best-known cycles are the stories of Sandokan and the Black Corsair, series that popularized images of daring heroes in Asian, Malay, and Caribbean settings. His novels, including The Tigers of Mompracem, The Pirates of Malaysia, and The Black Corsair, shaped Italian popular imagery and the adventure literature of the turn of the twentieth century. Although widely read and translated—counted among the most translated Italian authors—his work was for the most part dismissed by contemporary academic critics. Personal difficulties and financial hardship marked his life and ended tragically; still, his legacy persists in the formation of the popular adventure canon and in inspiring numerous adaptations and editorial continuations.
