Emilio Gino Segrè was an Italian‑American physicist whose career ranged from Enrico Fermi’s laboratories to American particle accelerators. Trained first in engineering and later in physics at the University of La Sapienza, he became Fermi’s first doctoral student and carried out studies on neutron properties and chemical methods for distinguishing atomic isomers. He moved to the United States in 1938 and joined the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory; during World War II he served as a group leader on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, contributing to the development of nuclear weapons. After the war he was a professor of physics at the University of California (1945–1972), where he led experimental research in particle physics. In partnership with Owen Chamberlain, he used the Bevatron to demonstrate the existence of the antiproton in 1955, a discovery that earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959. He was also associated with the discovery of elements and isotopes such as astatine and plutonium‑239. Author of works on Enrico Fermi and of personal memoirs, he left an important legacy in twentieth‑century experimental physics.
