Emily Strayer (born Emily Burns Erwin) is an American musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist, known as one of the founders of the country group The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks). Over her career she has been noted for instrumental versatility — she plays banjo, dobro, guitar, lap steel, bass, mandolin, accordion, fiddle, piano and sitar — and for her contributions as a songwriter to the band's repertoire. Formed with her sister Martie and other members in the youth bluegrass scene, Emily helped shape the group's sound and identity, which achieved enormous commercial success with albums such as Wide Open Spaces and Fly. Her instrumental technique and arrangements were key to setting the band apart within country music and to its critical and popular recognition. After the controversy sparked by vocalist Natalie Maines' comments in 2003, Emily took a supportive stance toward her bandmates and remained active in the music scene. During the trio's hiatus she stepped forward as lead vocalist for the side project Court Yard Hounds, writing most of the tracks on the album released in 2010. Beyond her artistic career, Emily's personal life and experiences have influenced her songwriting — several songs reflect intimate moments and personal transitions — cementing her place as an interpreter and songwriter within contemporary country and folk.
