Enrique Peña Nieto is a Mexican politician and lawyer affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He held prominent state offices, most notably serving as governor of the State of Mexico (2005–2011), during which he implemented an ambitious program of public works and services — including transport projects and an expansion of the health network — presented in his campaign as “608 commitments.” Elected president of Mexico in 2012, his arrival at the federal executive marked the PRI’s return to power after twelve years. His federal government faced criticisms and crises that defined his term: student protests during the campaign, controversies over alleged irregularities and accusations of links between campaign funders and his campaign, as well as incidents such as the disappearance of 43 students in 2014 and the rise in fuel prices in 2017. Peña Nieto’s administration was also affected by economic fluctuations and a sharp decline in popularity over the term. His political legacy is the subject of intense debate in Mexico, encompassing both modernization and infrastructure initiatives and controversies over transparency and governmental accountability.
