Erin Pizzey is a British writer and activist whose pioneering work on domestic violence influenced social policy and practice in the United Kingdom. In 1971 she founded the first refuge for women experiencing domestic abuse in Chiswick, an initiative that brought greater public attention to the problem and prompted the creation of dozens of similar services. Her work combined direct intervention—opening and maintaining shelters, at times using occupation of properties—with public advocacy and study of the phenomenon. While researching the profiles of women who came to the shelters, Pizzey drew a distinction between “women who were truly beaten” and “women prone to violence,” arguing that a significant portion of domestic violence is reciprocal. These conclusions, set out in her book Prone to Violence and in subsequent studies, sparked intense debate and controversy that affected her relationship with the feminist movement and with organizations that emerged later. The notoriety of her methods and positions brought both institutional recognition and criticism: she was praised by politicians for her pioneering work while also reporting threats and persecution that led her to leave the country. Her legacy remains complex—acknowledged for initiating practical responses to domestic violence and disputed for her interpretations of its causes and dynamics.
