Ernest Henri Rouart was a French painter associated with the Impressionist circle, also active as a watercolorist, pastellist, printmaker and art collector. The son of industrialist and collector Henri Rouart, he initially trained in mathematics before turning to the arts, receiving decisive support from Edgar Degas, who gave him lessons and guided him in copying the Old Masters at the Louvre. His output includes portraits and genre scenes, among them images of family members and friends from his artistic circle. Alongside his artistic practice, Rouart became known as a promoter and organizer of exhibitions: he served on salon committees and, together with his wife Julie Manet (daughter of Berthe Morisot), helped drive important shows, including retrospectives of Manet, Degas and Morisot. The couple also made significant donations of works to the French public collection, helping to ensure key pieces remained in national museums. Both by inheritance and choice he was an active collector, buying works during the dispersal of the family collection and working with dealers such as Paul Durand‑Ruel. His role as an intermediary between artists, institutions and the public, and his participation as an exhibitor in Paris’s major salons, cemented his role in preserving and promoting the Impressionist legacy.
