Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Anglo‑Irish polar explorer and a central figure of the so‑called Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. He began his naval career early and served as an officer on the Discovery Expedition (1901–04), an experience that led him to later lead his own missions to the frozen continent. In 1907–09 he commanded the Nimrod Expedition, reaching Farthest South at 88°23′S, an achievement that earned him a royal honor. His ambition to cross Antarctica led to the Imperial Trans‑Antarctic Expedition (1914–17), whose ship Endurance was crushed by the ice. The ensuing journeys and the remarkable rescue of the crew established Shackleton as a symbol of leadership under extreme conditions, although the crossing itself was not completed. He returned to the continent in 1921 for a scientific expedition but died shortly afterward on South Georgia. Outside the polar arenas he faced financial and business difficulties; after his death he was for a time forgotten and later rediscovered in the 20th century as a model of crisis management and team cohesion. His modern reputation rests chiefly on his courage, his care for his men, and his ability to maintain morale in dangerous situations.
