Ernest Taylor “Ernie” Pyle was an American journalist and war correspondent known for his intimate reporting on ordinary soldiers during World War II. Before the conflict, he made his name as a roving human‑interest columnist, writing in a direct, colloquial style about lives and landscapes across the United States, which earned him wide circulation and national esteem. As a war correspondent he applied the same individual‑centered perspective — narrating combatants’ experiences in the first person and emphasizing the human impact of war over strategic movements.

His work on the European and Pacific fronts won him the Pulitzer Prize and made his columns required reading in hundreds of newspapers, making him one of the best‑known correspondents of his time. The column “The Death of Captain Waskow” became exemplary of his ability to render grief and comradeship in journalistic terms with strong emotional force. Pyle was shot and killed during the Battle of Okinawa, and his name remained associated with the voice of the anonymous soldier.

Pyle’s legacy includes collections of his reporting and museums and archives dedicated to his work, which influenced generations of reporters by valuing the human story of war.
