Ethel Mars was an American illustrator and wood engraver best known for her white-line woodcuts that contributed to a revival of color printmaking. Trained at the Cincinnati Art Academy, she built a career as an illustrator in New York before settling for an extended period in Europe with her partner and fellow artist Maud Hunt Squire. From the early years of the twentieth century, her travels through artistic centers — including Munich, Paris and various towns in Brittany — deepened her command of polychrome printmaking.
Her work favors landscapes, portraits, street scenes and café interiors, and is marked by formally simple compositions, bold color planes and a decorative approach related to modern movements such as Fauvism. In 1915 she joined the Provincetown printmakers, the collective responsible for developing the technique known as the Provincetown white-line woodcut, which made it possible to print multiple colors from a single matrix.
A regular exhibitor in French and American salons and an elected member of artistic institutions, Mars also taught and influenced generations of printmakers. Her legacy lies in the combination of modernist sensitivity and technical innovation in wood engraving, which secured her lasting relevance in both American and transatlantic printmaking.
