Eva Klemperer (born Elisabeth Hedwig Eva Schlemmer) was a German musician and translator whose work spanned piano, organ, painting and literary translation. Trained as a concert pianist, she early abandoned a solo performing career to teach and later pursued advanced studies in the organ. Married to the philologist Victor Klemperer, she collaborated closely with him, aiding in the drafting and editing of his academic texts. Her life was shaped by the upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century: she lived in cities such as Berlin, Munich, Leipzig and, finally, Dresden, where she took part in the local cultural life. During the Nazi period she risked her own safety to preserve pages from her husband's diary, contributing decisively to the survival of that eyewitness account of daily life under the regime. After the war she joined efforts to rebuild Dresden’s cultural life and resumed performing in concerts organized by the GDR Cultural Association. Much of her musical output and her paintings were lost; by contrast, her translations from French and Spanish were published in East Germany, including works by Maupassant, Jean Cassou and others.
