Federica Pellegrini is one of Italy’s greatest swimmers of the modern era, known by the nickname “La Divina.” A freestyle specialist, she excelled particularly in the 200 m and 400 m events, where she set world records and won Olympic and world titles. She was the first woman to swim the 400 m freestyle in under four minutes (3:59.15, Rome World Championships, 2009) and held the 200 m freestyle world record for several years.
Pellegrini won an Olympic medal at just 16 and took gold in the 200 m freestyle at Beijing 2008. At the World Championships she put together a remarkable run: she became the only swimmer—male or female—to record eight consecutive podium finishes in the same event (200 m freestyle), extending that streak to nine through 2019. Her career also includes multiple European titles and short-course records.
Beyond her achievements in the pool, Pellegrini played an important institutional role as a member of the International Olympic Committee and retired from competitive swimming in 2021. Her legacy remains a technical and symbolic reference in Italian swimming, noted both for her longevity at the highest level and for her ability to renew herself across different phases of her career.
