Felicia Montealegre Bernstein was an actress and public figure whose work crossed theater, television and symphonic concerts. Born in Costa Rica and raised in Chile, she settled in New York in the 1940s, where she appeared in Broadway productions, Shakespearean plays and notable premieres, as well as regular appearances in dramatic anthology programs during the golden age of live television. She also made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1973 in Les Troyens. Alongside her husband, conductor Leonard Bernstein, Montealegre developed collaborations that combined dramatic narration and classical music; her voice inspired works and premieres, including the American premiere of Symphony No. 3: Kaddish. As a performer she was noted for a wide range of roles — from Ibsen to Lorca — and for dramatic concert presentations that introduced general audiences to serious music. An activist, she chaired the Women's Division of the New York Civil Liberties Union and supported antiwar campaigns and civil rights causes, participating in protests and initiatives to aid political prisoners. Her public involvement also included support for Amnesty International; after her death a fund was established in her memory to support human rights activities. Montealegre left a legacy as a multifaceted artist and cultural hostess, known for bridging the theater, television and New York musical scenes as well as for her public commitment to social causes.
