Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralín Marcos was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He began his public career in the legislature — the House of Representatives (1949–1959) and the Senate (1959–1965) — and won the presidency by election, initially consolidating support through infrastructure programs that attracted international credit and backing. In 1972 he declared martial law, remaining in power until 1981 and expanding executive prerogatives under the 1973 Constitution in a model he called “constitutional authoritarianism.” His regime became known for press censorship, violent repression of the opposition and persecution of various groups, along with allegations of electoral fraud and human rights abuses. The economy grew early in his rule but ended in debt crisis, inflation and widespread impoverishment. Official documents attributed multibillion-dollar looting of the public coffers to the Marcos family, and the government is widely classified as a kleptocracy. Rising public outrage after the assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. and mounting evidence of corruption precipitated the 1986 election and the subsequent People Power Revolution, which ousted Marcos and sent him into exile in Hawaii. His legacy remains deeply controversial in the Philippines, with lasting effects on politics and public memory.
