Ferdinando II de’ Medici was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1621 to 1670, ruling for 49 years during a period of political, economic, and scientific change. The son of Cosimo II and Maria Maddalena of Austria, he assumed power under the regency of his mother and his grandmother Christina of Lorraine; his authority was not fully established until Christina’s removal in 1636. His reign coincided with the decline of the family’s financial power: the remaining activities of the Medici bank ceased, and the regional economy entered a prolonged phase of stagnation, worsened by the costs of the Wars of Castro and crises such as the plague of 1630. On a personal level he married Vittoria della Rovere and had two children, including his successor Cosimo III. Known for his scientific curiosity, he collected instruments such as barometers and telescopes and supported scientific initiatives in Florence, while his brother Leopoldo helped found the Accademia del Cimento. He died in 1670 and was buried in the Basilica of San Lorenzo. His legacy combines efforts to promote scientific knowledge with the onset of the economic and political decline of Medici Tuscany.
