Ferid Murad was an American physician and pharmacologist whose work transformed the understanding of how vasodilators act. His research showed that nitroglycerin and related compounds relax smooth muscle by releasing nitric oxide, which raises intracellular cGMP — a discovery that underpinned therapeutic advances in cardiology and vascular pharmacology. For this contribution he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998. Trained in chemistry and an early participant in MD–PhD pharmacology programs, Murad built an academic and clinical career at institutions such as the University of Virginia, Stanford, and McGovern Medical School, and he also worked in the pharmaceutical industry, including Abbott Laboratories and his own biotechnology company. He held leadership positions in internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and translational research. Recognized with awards such as the Albert Lasker Award and elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Murad also took part in global scientific initiatives, including the Mainau Declaration on climate change. His legacy lies in bridging basic discovery and clinical application to improve treatment of cardiovascular disease.
