Francesco Cossiga was a prominent Italian politician and member of the Christian Democracy party, a central figure of the so‑called First Republic. He held key positions: minister of the interior — during which he reorganized the police forces, civil protection and intelligence services — prime minister from 1979 to 1980, and president of the Republic from 1985 to 1992. Before entering politics, he taught constitutional law at the University of Sassari. His tenure as interior minister was marked by a hardline approach to social protests and urban clashes: he deployed the armed forces in incidents such as the 1977 Bologna disturbances, drawing criticism for repressive methods that earned him the nickname “iron minister.” He was in office during the kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades, an episode that prompted complex crisis committees and led to his resignation from the ministry. As prime minister he also confronted the tragedy of the Bologna railway station bombing in 1980. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and controversial figures in Italian politics of his era, with a legacy linked to reforms of security institutions and a prominent role in the political and terrorism crises of the 1970s and early 1980s.
