Francis Galton was an English polymath whose work spanned geography, meteorology, statistics, psychology, and biology during the Victorian era. He rose to prominence as an explorer and geographer, receiving the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for pioneering surveys in southwest Africa, and consolidated his reputation with the best-seller The Art of Travel. In meteorology he helped pioneer modern practice by publishing the first weather map in a newspaper and proposing the theory of anticyclones.
In science, he introduced quantitative methods for studying human differences, founding psychometrics and differential psychology; he developed central statistical concepts such as correlation and regression toward the mean, and popularized the phrase "nature versus nurture." He applied empirical procedures — questionnaires and anthropometric measurements — to investigate heredity and intelligence, and devised a method of classifying fingerprints that proved useful for forensic science.
Alongside technical innovations such as the Galton whistle, his output included more than 340 articles and books. He was knighted in 1909. At the same time, his advocacy of eugenics and ideas aligned with social Darwinism attracted later criticism, controversially marking his scientific and social legacy.
