Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer and amateur poet best known for writing the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” which became the lyrics of the United States national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. He was inspired in 1814 when he witnessed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and saw the American flag survive the attack; the poem was quickly published and set to a popular tune of the time. For about four decades he practiced law in Maryland and Washington, D.C., handling notable cases — including the conspiracy trial of Aaron Burr — and arguing before the Supreme Court. In 1833 President Andrew Jackson appointed him U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, a post he held until 1841. His public life contains contradictions: although he sometimes criticized slavery and provided pro bono legal aid to enslaved people seeking freedom, Key owned slaves and suppressed abolitionist activity while serving as U.S. Attorney. He also took part in the American Colonization Society, which advocated relocating freed African Americans to Africa. Key’s legacy is chiefly cultural: the words he wrote became a national symbol, but his biography prompts debate because of his positions and actions regarding slavery.
