Franco Dino Rasetti was an Italian physicist whose career moved from classical experimental physics to the natural sciences. Trained in Pisa, he joined the noted Via Panisperna group in Rome, where he collaborated with Enrico Fermi on studies of neutrons and induced radioactivity; he took part in work that contributed to understanding the processes that lead to nuclear fission. In the 1920s and 1930s he distinguished himself in Raman spectroscopy: his measurements on diatomic molecules provided decisive experimental evidence about nuclear structure and anticipated the need for the proton–neutron model. Faced with political polarization in Italy, he left the country in 1939 and pursued an academic career in Canada (Université Laval) and the United States (Johns Hopkins University), where he was a professor until 1967 and became an American citizen in 1952. He differed from many contemporaries by refusing to participate in the Manhattan Project on moral grounds. From the 1950s onward, Rasetti turned intensively to geology, paleontology, entomology, and botany, becoming a leading figure in studies of the Cambrian. His legacy combines fundamental contributions to experimental physics with a scholarly body of work in the natural sciences, noted for the elegance and clarity of its writing.
