James Gordon Brown is a prominent Scottish politician, known for his long career in the Labour Party and for serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010. Before leading the executive, he rose to prominence as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1997 to 2007, a period in which he promoted significant institutional changes in British monetary policy, including transferring responsibility for setting interest rates to the Bank of England, and strengthened the Treasury’s role in economic oversight. A Member of Parliament since 1983, Brown gained academic and civic recognition at a young age — he served as Rector of the University of Edinburgh, edited the Red Paper on Scotland, and wrote works on politics and economics. His tenure as chancellor coincided with a long period of economic growth, although it was marked by rising household debt and by controversial decisions such as the sale of the country’s gold reserves. As prime minister, he led major state responses to the global financial crisis of 2008–2009, including bank rescue packages and state participation in struggling institutions. His government also passed significant legislation on climate and equality. After the electoral defeat of 2010, Brown remained active in public life, including an active role in the debate over the United Kingdom’s union during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
