Frederick Anderson Goodwin is a Scottish chartered accountant and banking executive best known for serving as CEO of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) from 2001 to 2009. Under his leadership the group underwent rapid international expansion, with large acquisitions—such as NatWest and part of ABN Amro—that transformed the bank into one of the world’s largest institutions by assets and market capitalization. At its peak, RBS showed significant growth in assets and profits, driven by investment banking and leveraged finance activities. Goodwin earned a reputation for cutting costs and integrating acquisitions, and in the City he was noted for his effectiveness in generating operational efficiencies. However, the ambitious acquisitions and exposure to risky operations weakened the bank’s balance sheet during the 2007–2008 financial crisis. In October 2008 Goodwin announced his resignation as CEO, shortly before RBS reported record losses and was effectively nationalized. After leaving the bank, he had short spells as a senior adviser in private consultancy. The Goodwin era is remembered both for RBS’s global transformation and for the consequences the expansionist strategy had during the financial crisis.
