Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was a French sculptor whose work gained international recognition in the 19th century. From Colmar, he became known for large-scale monuments and for bringing themes of heroism and resistance into the public landscape, influences also drawn from his experience of the Franco-Prussian War. He is best remembered for conceiving and executing the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States inaugurated in 1886, and for the Lion of Belfort, a symbol of the city’s resistance during the siege of 1870–1871. His career included civic and funerary commissions, regular participation in the Paris Salons, and projects inspired by travels to North Africa and the Middle East, which sparked his interest in colossal sculpture. He also produced works for American cities and proposed monumental projects that were never realized, such as a monumental lighthouse for the Suez Canal. In addition to sculpture, Bartholdi worked in painting, watercolor, photography, and drawing, was made a Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1886, and remained active until his death in 1904. His legacy endures in emblematic public works that shaped Franco‑American collective memory.
