Frederic Raphael is an American–British writer whose career spans fiction, biography, journalism and film screenwriting. He rose to prominence in the 1960s with novels and, above all, with notable film scripts of the period, including Darling and Far from the Madding Crowd, establishing his presence in the postwar British cultural scene. Raphael won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Darling (1965) and was nominated again for Two for the Road (1967), distinctions that underscore his skill in translating themes of relationships and identity into cinematic narratives. He also worked with figures such as John Schlesinger and Stanley Kubrick, collaborating on the script for Eyes Wide Shut and later documenting that experience in memoir. The author of more than twenty novels and numerous works of non‑fiction, he has written biographies of figures such as Lord Byron and W. Somerset Maugham, as well as translations and essay collections. His semi‑autobiographical series The Glittering Prizes achieved critical success and moved between television and literature. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Raphael left a multifaceted legacy as a novelist, biographer and influential screenwriter in the British literary and cinematic canon.
