Fritz Gerlich was a journalist, historian and one of the most prominent public voices in journalistic resistance to Nazism in Germany. Trained in history, he worked as an archivist and became editor‑in‑chief of the Münchner Neueste Nachrichten, where—already a critic of Adolf Hitler—he exposed the rising authoritarianism and antisemitism. His intellectual course moved from conservative nationalism to liberal positions and, after his conversion in 1931, to Catholic social doctrine. From the late 1920s Gerlich founded and edited a political weekly that opposed both communism and National Socialism, achieving wide circulation and a critical readership. His writings and editorial campaigns sought to warn of the dangers of the Nazi movement and to defend democratic coexistence against extremes. Arrested shortly after the Nazi seizure of power, Gerlich was interned at Dachau and killed during the purge known as the Night of the Long Knives, becoming a symbol of journalistic resistance and a political martyr. The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising later opened a cause recognizing his moral and religious significance.
