Fritz Perls (Friedrich Salo Perls) was a German–Jewish psychiatrist and psychotherapist, cofounder with his wife Laura Perls of the approach known as Gestalt therapy. Trained in medicine at the Humboldt University of Berlin, he worked as a neuropsychiatrist and participated in the artistic and intellectual circles of Germany between the wars, influences that shaped his emphasis on immediate experience and the therapeutic relationship. His professional career included analyses with prominent figures in psychoanalysis and clinical work supervised by various authors of the period. The rise of Nazism forced him to emigrate — first to the Netherlands and then to South Africa, where he founded the South African Institute of Psychoanalysis and published Ego, Hunger and Aggression (1942), a work that signals his critiques of and theoretical developments relative to the classical psychoanalytic model. After moving to the United States, Perls consolidated and disseminated Gestalt therapy, becoming known for his focus on individual responsibility, present-moment experience, and the integration of body and mind. His legacy remains influential in humanistic psychotherapy and experience-centered approaches, although his positions provoked debate within the psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic communities.
