Fritz Todt was a civil engineer and a prominent political figure in Nazi Germany, known for his role in organizing and directing the regime’s large engineering projects. Trained in civil engineering, he took on technical and administrative positions after 1933 and was appointed by Hitler as General Inspector of Roads, a post from which he coordinated the construction of the autobahnen and other infrastructure projects tied to state aims. In 1938 he founded the Organisation Todt (OT), an engineering agency that mobilized private companies and state services for works such as the Siegfried Line (Westwall) and the Atlantic Wall. During World War II the OT concentrated vast labor forces, including thousands of forced workers; this practice links the organization to repressive policies and crimes committed against occupied populations. In March 1940 Todt was named Reich Minister for Armaments and Munitions, a position in which he oversaw German war production at the start of the conflict and implemented measures to rationalize industry. He died in 1942 in an air crash and was succeeded by Albert Speer.
