Gabriel Matzneff is a French writer of Russian origin, author of novels, essays, poetry and an extensive diary published in multiple volumes. Trained in literature and shaped by the milieu of White Russian émigrés, his work addresses themes such as dandyism, religious faith, mockery and political stances, which brought him both recognition and controversy over decades. He published from the 1960s onward, maintained relationships with literary figures such as Henry de Montherlant, Emil Cioran and Hergé, and contributed to numerous journalistic outlets. He also became notorious for literary confessions about attraction to minors, expressed in works such as Les Moins de seize ans and in passages of his private journal, a stance that sparked widespread scandal and public debate in subsequent decades. His literary output continued to be read and discussed by critics and supporters, and part of his archives is now held in institutional collections. Given the sensitive and controversial nature of some of his positions expressed in published texts, caution is advised when presenting and interpreting his legacy.
