Garret Desmond FitzGerald was an Irish politician, economist and lawyer who was a central figure in Fine Gael in the 1970s and 1980s. Leader of the party from 1977 to 1987, he served as Taoiseach in two terms (1981–82 and 1982–87) and was Minister for Foreign Affairs in the 1973–77 coalition government. His parliamentary career included service as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1969 to 1992 and a period in the Seanad from 1965 to 1969. A graduate in history and economics from University College Dublin, with a doctorate published as Planning in Ireland, he was noted for combining technical training with an interest in public policy, economic planning and international relations. Before entering politics he worked at Aer Lingus and as a university lecturer; he also practiced law and worked as a journalist. Known for his liberal positions within Fine Gael and for advocating a pluralist Ireland, FitzGerald contributed to debates on European integration and the country’s modernization. After leaving the party leadership he remained a public presence as president of an international affairs institute and as a columnist, leaving a legacy of pro‑European thinking and an emphasis on economic and social reform.
