Gary Stephen Webb was an American investigative journalist known for reporting that challenged powerful political and military interests. Trained on the job in local newsrooms in Kentucky and Ohio, he built a career in investigative journalism and joined the San Jose Mercury News team covering the Loma Prieta earthquake, a coverage that earned the paper a Pulitzer Prize. His notoriety stems from the “Dark Alliance” series (1996), published in the Mercury News, which connected the rise of the crack trade in Los Angeles to intermediaries linked to the Nicaraguan Contras and suggested possible CIA complicity. The series provoked a strong public reaction, official inquiries and criticism from other outlets, which pointed to exaggerations and editorial flaws; an internal review by the paper itself acknowledged weaknesses in reporting and presentation. Webb stood by his findings, published a book on the subject in 1998 and continued working as a reporter and researcher, including assignments for the California Assembly. His work remains controversial, debated by critics who question his methods and by defenders who emphasize the importance of his observations about intersections between foreign policy and drug trafficking. He died in 2004; his career left a complex legacy regarding the limits and risks of investigative journalism when confronting state and media interests.
