American guitarist, singer, songwriter and author Gary Talley rose to prominence as the lead guitarist of the Grammy-nominated group The Box Tops, known for hits such as "The Letter." After his initial period with the band, Talley established himself as a studio musician and accompanist in Memphis, working with soul and rock'n'roll artists, which broadened his reputation and led him to perform on larger circuits in Atlanta and later to settle in Nashville. In Nashville he took part in recordings and projects with leading country and soul artists, including Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette and Waylon Jennings. In addition to performing, he built a career as a songwriter whose songs were recorded by various performers and as a guitar teacher: he published instructional material and in 1999 produced a pioneering video aimed at songwriters who play guitar. His specialized method and teaching work attracted professional students, and his career alternated between teaching, session work and touring with established artists. Recognized as a founding member of The Box Tops, Talley was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and he remains active with live performances, recordings and family projects that also have a charitable character.
