Gary Tillery is an American writer and sculptor whose work ranges from spiritually oriented biographies to large public bronze monuments. He became known for books that examine cultural figures — including John Lennon, George Harrison and Elvis Presley — through the lens of their convictions and inner development, notably The Cynical Idealist, which broadened discussion of Lennon as a thinker and influenced international cultural tributes.
Trained in Latin American Studies and International Management, Tillery left a career in advertising to devote himself full time to writing and sculpture. His literary output includes novels inspired by the Vietnam experience, volumes of poetry and works of nonfiction that combine research with reflective narrative.
As a sculptor he has completed significant public commissions: he created the focal work for the Chicago Vietnam Veterans Memorial (2005) and has produced numerous statues and busts installed in cities such as Phoenix, Fort Wayne, Gary (Indiana) and Harrogate (Tennessee). His works frequently engage civic memory and community commemoration, earning him a reputation in contemporary public art.
