Geoffrey Holder was a multifaceted artist from Trinidad and Tobago whose career encompassed dance, theater, film, directing, choreography, visual arts, and composition. Trained in the milieu of Caribbean dance companies, he became a principal dancer with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and made his Broadway debut in House of Flowers, forging connections with figures such as Agnes de Mille and Alvin Ailey. His work as a creator and performer ranged from avant-garde pieces to large popular productions. In theater, Holder gained prominence by directing and designing the costumes for The Wiz, a production that earned him two Tony Awards and represented a major achievement for Black artists on Broadway. As a choreographer and repertory creator, he contributed to companies such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Dance Theatre of Harlem, producing works for which he also composed music and designed costumes. In film and television, he became known for memorable roles—among them the villain Baron Samedi in Live and Let Die—as well as voice work and appearances as the advertising waiter for the 7 Up brand. At the same time, he was an award‑winning painter, collector, and author of books on cooking and photography, leaving an interdisciplinary legacy that remained influential in the performing and visual arts.
