George Antheil was an American composer, pianist, writer and inventor whose career ranged between the European musical avant-garde and the artistic scene of Paris in the 1920s–30s. Trained in piano and composition, he early distinguished himself through sonic experimentation and a drive to renew musical language, culminating in the ballet Ballet Mécanique (1924–26), a landmark work noted for its percussive character and its connection to experimental cinema.
Throughout his life he maintained an active career as a concert performer and author, also publishing essays and memoirs that reflected his provocative views on music and society. He lived and worked within literary and artistic circles — among them James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway — and benefited from influential patrons who shaped his professional path.
Beyond his musical output, Antheil is known for his technological collaboration with actress Hedy Lamarr: together they developed and patented, in 1942, a frequency‑hopping system intended to prevent interference in military communications, an idea that later influenced modern communication technologies.
His legacy combines the image of a sonic innovator and a multifaceted figure whose works and inventions remain relevant both in the musical repertoire and in the history of wireless communication technologies.
